I was tasked with developing the band’s initial visual identity. For each release I worked to maintain a consistent identity while simultaneously integrating new design language inspired by each release’s historical inspiration.
The persistent elements of the visual identity were established with their initial release Afternoons. Simple, bold backdrops, quietly absurd set decoration, straight-faced goofiness.
From a functional standpoint the backdrops offer a timeless and colorful canvas onto which the duo and props may be easily arranged. While the lower-contrast, but still directional, lighting mimics the film photography lighting common to the era of pop releases that inspired the Weirdos.
The heavy focus on clean, pristine studio photography mirrors the band’s own studio-focus, while set dec, wardrobe, and graphic elements offer visual references congruent with the musical references in the pieces themselves.
For example, their second release Alcudia took inspiration from Juan Garcia Esquivel. So for the cover I drew from Esquivel’s “Exploring New Sounds In Stereo”, making explicit visual reference via the blue background and telescope. Bennett’s wardrobe and conductor’s baton serves a dual role as both a broader reference to Eqsuivel’s career as a composer & bandleader and to the prominent role the string section plays in the release’s two tracks.
Beyond the band’s collective identity, my work with Pop Weirdos also serves to highlight the individual members’ respective personalities. Bennett’s playful, silly attitude and Jamison’s more dour, academic personality permeate their respective visual identities, expressed through wardrobe, posing, and expression.
